The Second Sex

I found it!  I found a copy of The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvior.  I started reading the Introduction last night.  I'm excited to read this important piece of Feminist writing, but I can tell that this is going to take a while.  If you have any interest in Feminist Theory or history at all, I think you should give this book a try with us.  If you couln't care less about either topic, you should give it a try anyway.

I will continue reading this and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.  Everyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

I know I told you that we were starting The Second Sex, but I am having some trouble.  My local library does not have it.  While I search for a copy, I have started reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling.

This book is a collection of "fairytales" that children from the wizarding world grew up with.  I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan, so naturally I am very excited to read these.  I read the introduction last night and decided that I will be reading each story separately, just like bedtime stories.

As soon as I can find our other book, I will let you know what I think of it.

Rosemary's Baby

I finished this book on Friday evening.  I will say that I would never wish something like that on anyone; I don't care how much I don't like them.

I figured out very quickly who was responsible for what was going to happen, but that didn't make it any less creepy.  I have not watched the movie so I did not have any prior knowledge about the plot or anything else.  Rosemary is the main character.  She is a young woman from Omaha that has recently moved to New York City and married an actor named Guy Woodhouse.  After two years of marriage, the happy couple finally gets the chance to move into the famous Bramford apartments.  This is where it all begins.  This is where they can entertain guests, enjoy life, and maybe even start a family.  A new chapter in their lives certainly does begin here.

I am happy to say that I enjoyed this novel.  The next book on our list is very different from this one.  We will now move on to The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvior.  My friend will start reading this evening and I will pick up the book tomorrow.  Happy reading everyone!

Book 4

I finally had the time to finish The Great Divorce.  This book is a great read.  I would truly recommend this to everyone.

We began Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin.  I am only a few pages in, but I think this will be good.  I haven't read much, if any, horror before, so this should be a treat.  I feel that we timed this book pretty well actually.  Since Halloween is tomorrow, this fits perfectly into my week.

Everyone please have a safe and fun Halloween!

The Great Divorce

We have not started Rosemary's Baby yet.  While my friend catches up on some other things, I have found a wonderful book to read while I wait to continue our list.

Last weekend I had to help proctor an exam for some students.  While I watched them take a test, I started reading The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis.  This little book is amazing.  I have not been able to pick it up to finish it yet this week, but I know that I will be able to very soon.  I am so glad this book is in my own personal library :)

Madame Bovary

I finished reading Madame Bovary on September 16.  It was a much better read than I thought it would be.  It was humorous.  I enjoyed seeing what Emma was going to do next.  How was she going to rationalize her next adventure?  How was she going to fix everything?

If you are looking for a classic work to read that will make you laugh a little, this book is a good choice.

Our next book will be Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin.  We have not started yet, but I will let you know when we do.

Moby Dick

I finally finished Moby Dick.  I don't think it has ever taken me so long to read a book before.  I have read books with way more pages in a more timely manner and with much more enthusiasm.  I am so glad to be done with this book so I can move on in our reading list.  I know this book is a classic, but really...  I did not like it.

I was very disappointed in the ending.  With all of the lead up, I expected the ending to be something interesting.  I feel like even Melville just wanted this novel to be over with.  In my opinion, the ending did not match up with how the rest of the story read.

Anyways...Another piece of literature to check off my list :)  This evening we will be starting Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.  My initial thoughts about this book are not wonderful.  If it wasn't on our list, I might not pick it up because of what the cover says the story is about; however, it is on my list and I feel that I should give it a try.

July 23, 2012

I am still reading Moby Dick.  I apologize for the slow pace.  I have had a lot going on.  To be honest, that is only part of it.  I'm not loving this book.  The first 250 pages or so were pretty interesting, but after that I really just want to be done with this book.  I have 100 pages left and will push forward so I can make it to the next book.  I have made it over 400 pages, I cannot quit now.

A Quick Introduction

I have read a few books in my time.  I like all kinds of different things.  Reading is one of my favorite things to do and I like to share that with people.  My husband and two of my best friends are also avid readers.  I want to use this as a way to share some of what I read, and some thoughts about them.  I will try not to give away too much of the story, but I will give my honest opinion.

Right now my friend Nikki and I are reading through a list together.  I have a friend at work that might be joining us in this venture.  The list began with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.  I don't love this book.  I know it's an American classic, but I didn't really enjoy it.  I do like that I can say that I have read it twice, but that's about it.  We have now moved on to Moby Dick by Herman Melville.  I like this book a lot more than I thought I would.  I also read my Bible everyday.

So yeah.  That's where I'm going to start.  I might mention some books that I have already read for the joy of sharing them, but for today I will leave it at that.

Welcome to the world of being a bookworm!
